The plan right now is to host it at @ajbombers. Why? @blatzliquor showed us this twitpic, and we can’t NOT have a mini burger in our Bloody Marys!

Top WordPress plugins

I am a huge fan of WordPress – have been for years. And over the years, I’ve learned some tips and tricks to make life a little easier. The first of these is finding the right plugins. Plugins can make your life so much easier.

So, here’s my Top Five Must-Have WordPress Plugins:

  1. Akismet – This baby blocks just about every spam comment on my site. It’s a standard WordPress plugin, which should be included with the installation of your WordPress blog on your server. If it isn’t, make sure this is one of the first plugins you activate. Don’t believe it’s worth it? Check out my stats:
  2. akismet

  3. WordPress Automatic Upgrade – Even for a WordPress addict expert superfan such as myself, upgrading to the newest version of WordPress can be tricky. This plugin takes all the guesswork out of upgrading. I always include this plugin when I set up a client’s new blog. It’s a life saver.
  4. All in one SEO Pack – SEO has quickly become a hot topic on the interwebs. (and, rightly so.) SEO stands for search engine optimization, which is a fancy way of saying “ranking higher in google and other search engines.” This plugin requires a little work after it’s installed. You can’t just install it and expect it to do all the work for you. Once installed, you should see this box near the bottom of the page whenever you are creating a new post.seo
Here’s where you’re going to summarize your blog post with keywords in both the title and the description. Here’s an example of what I did for this post:
    seo3
  5. Twitter Tools – These days, everyone is all-a-Twitter, and rightly so. The social networking site is addicting. There are plenty of place where you can find out more about Twitter if you’re not already on it – just Google “what is twitter” and you should get a bazillion results. It’s a great, free tool you should be using for your blog/business. This plugin will automatically tweet for you each time a new blog is posted. Basically, it saves you the step of writing up a tweet and shortening the url yourself.
  6. Sociable – This is one of my new favorite plugins. It will help your posts become viral. If your readers want to share your post, they don’t have to grab the url and post it into a tweet, on their Facebook page, fark, digg or stumble upon. All they have to do is click on one of the little icons (you should see it at the bottom of this post) and voila! Your post has viral potential.

There are thousands of plugins out there and I’m hoping to start blogging more about the techie side of me! If you have any good plugins you’d like me to check out, post a comment. :D

Daily Show Mocks Twitter

I am so addicted to twitter, but this is hilarious!

I am ALWAYS getting asked about Twitter by non-believers. My standard response is that Twitter is like your Facebook status on crack. How do you describe Twitter to non-users? How do you bring them to the “dark side”?

Custom Blog Design: Just Me

It has been a pleasure to work with Anne-Marie Teo to create a new look for her blog. Anne-Marie is a gifted artist, which you’ll see if you look around her blog. Here are some screenshots and the proof of the site so you can see what we came up with together!

Just Me - Blog Post

Just Me - Photo Gallery

Just Me - Proof

I created this blog look for Anne-Marie using digital scrapbooking kit items from the Neon Tantrum Kit by Studio mgl and glitter from Holly McCaig’s Jubilee Kit at 2Peas.

This blog was loosely based off the Weeds WordPress Theme by Natalie Jost and features a bunch of fun plugins, like the Slickr Gallery, TwitThis, PostFooter and Twitter Tools.

Mac Daddy is in the House!

Mac daddy

This thing makes my laptop look puny… and I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 (not a small laptop).

I absolutely love it.

Mac Daddy, will you be mine forever?

The hard drive divorce

I’m not really sure where to start.

*deep breath*

Ok. So Thursday night I was working on some digital scrapbooking pages so I could finish things up for a photo book I was working on. I was watching the Democratic National Convention coverage on CNN and eager to hear Barack Obama’s acceptance speech.

Before I continue, I would appreciate it if my readers could make me a promise. Please don’t comment on what happened after the speech and make a negative link to supporting Obama to what happened. I know people will think that but I will not allow such comments on my blog. This is not about politics, this is about hard drives.

K?

So after hearing the speech, I was inspired to donate a little money to the campaign. I’ve never EVER donated for a political campaign, so this was a big step for me. I decided to donate a very nominal amount of money and as I reached for my wallet, my external hard drive tipped over. I didn’t think anything of it – put it back right side up and entered my payment information.

Then, I went back to photoshop to finish a few more pages and became physically ill.

My computer no longer recognized my external hard drive. You know, the place where ALL my photos from the last 6 or 7 years were stored? The place where all my digiscrap projects were saved… All my projects, graphics, etc I’ve created in the past couple months – GONE.

I tried everything – unplugging cords, restarting my computer, etc.

Nothing worked.

I have since tried a couple file recovery programs and it looks like I can recover a few folders of photos… of course these are not the folders I hoped for. So I don’t know if I’ll even bother recovering them, as I would have to buy the full version of the programs to do so.

I wanted my Guatemala photos. I wanted my digiscrap projects. I wanted my priceless photos of family and friends from the past few years.

But they are gone. All gone.

Of course, this all happened a couple days before I planned to back up my EHD to Cd’s. Isn’t that the way it always happens?

I know I can get some of these photos back. My dad has copies of our photos from Guatemala from this trip… and I know I will get a copy of photos from last year from another team member.

But what about my sister’s wedding? My best friend’s wedding? My graduation from college? My doggies? My friends’ children? My treasured memories?

Gone.

If this isn’t a lesson for each of us to be DIGILANT in backing up, I don’t know what else can call you to action.

I am currently backing up my internal hard drive thru the online system Mozy. I don’t want to lose all that too. Luckily, I had most of my digital scrapbooking papers and elements also saved in zip form on my hard drive so the only things I really lost were some brushes, actions and CU templates.

Many of my precious friends have suggested ways of recovering the data, but I am not hopeful. Nor do I have the extra funds to pay experts to get those images for me… if they’re not corrupted.

So, needless to say, I haven’t been very inspired to play in photoshop, to continue digital scrapbooking right now. The thought makes me sick to my stomach. And I feel like I was finally getting good at it, too!

In fact, I’d prefer not to be on a computer at all but I can’t do that. I have to make money somehow.

I am currently finishing up the details on some new services I will be offering, which include splash page customization, blog customization and biography/freelance copywriting. My goal is to save up money to buy a new computer in the spring. Perhaps an iMac? (Holly, I know you’ll be excited about that).

Also, not surprising by any means, I did not make the Fancy Pants design team. It was my first time trying out for something like that so I will chalk it up to experience. :) But, here are the projects I submitted.
