Christmas Decorations: A Handmade Holiday

My sister and I are obsessed with Christmas. It’s pretty ridiculous, actually. But, neither of us had a lot of money this year, so we devised a plan to decorate our apartment for cheap! We spent less than $30 on new decorations/supplies. Everything else we had on-hand. Here are some photos:

These are two wreaths I made using vintage milk bottle caps, some flowers/leaves from Prima and some gems (oh, and a heckulva lot of hot glue).

Here’s our Christmas tree. It’s an artificial one because Em had it already and we didn’t want to spend money on a real one this year. A third of our ornaments are handmade. Some are vintage (we got to raid Grandpa’s stash) and some are new. We used bead strands instead of garland. The countdown to Santa was a Secret Santa gift I got last year. It’s adorable. Next year, I need to buy or make an Advent calendar (after all, Jesus is the reason for the season). Then, at the foot of our tree next to the presents is a wine bottle light. I got it at a craft fair last year, but it would be super easy to make one yourself – it’s an empty wine bottle (I have plenty laying around here), put a short strand of Christmas lights in the bottle and decorate the neck of the bottle with ribbon, wraffia, and other little trinkets. Next year, I’m making a bunch of them!

I also wanted to make a Christmas banner. I’ve just recently started making banners and They are ohhhh-so-fun. I mostly use items from some Kenner Road kits, but also included some of my scrappy stash and vintage treasures. Here are some close-ups:

Let’s not forget about paper chains. Who says they’re just for kids? I used cardstock and papers from Cosmo Cricket and a fabulous transparency from Hambly. I included three li’l “ornaments” that fell from the swoops of the chain. Each one is circular and has a vintage milk bottle cap, a button, a felt shape and a gem.

There were plenty of other decorations, but I don’t have pictures of it all. Hope you had a fabulous Christmas. Happy New Year!

Custom Blog Design: Just Me

It has been a pleasure to work with Anne-Marie Teo to create a new look for her blog. Anne-Marie is a gifted artist, which you’ll see if you look around her blog. Here are some screenshots and the proof of the site so you can see what we came up with together!

I created this blog look for Anne-Marie using digital scrapbooking kit items from the Neon Tantrum Kit by Studio mgl and glitter from Holly McCaig’s Jubilee Kit at 2Peas.

This blog was loosely based off the Weeds WordPress Theme by Natalie Jost and features a bunch of fun plugins, like the Slickr Gallery, TwitThis, PostFooter and Twitter Tools.

Artisan Spotlight: Rebecca of Soap Deli

Welcome to a new feature on my blog, Amy’s Artisan Spotlight.

Each week (or more frequently) I will feature an artisan here on my blog. If you would like to be considered for my spotlight, please send an e-mail to amykant [at] gmail [dot] com.

Rebecca of Soap Deli First up is Rebecca of Rebecca’s Soap Delicatessen. Rebecca first caught my eye when she mentioned her special blend of soap for dry skin and eczema. This time of year, I have a lot of problems with this, so I of course wanted some more information.

My dry skin soaps are a spin off my original recipe. I’ve taken out the coconut oil which, because it is a very cleansing oil that creates a rich lather, some people with more sensitive skin can find drying. In it’s place I’ve used palm kernel oil, added cocoa butter, and used more of both olive and rice bran oils. The result is a gentle, moisturizing bar, that unlike olive oil only soaps known for their moisturizing properties, actually has a nice lather. (I’ve found olive oil only soaps don’t lather much at all.) Many of my customers, adults and kids alike, have told me my soaps for dry skin has cleared up their eczema as well as dry skin caused by chemo treatments for cancer.

Lavender Mint Soap I am definitely considering a purchase of either the Falling for You or Lavender Mint soaps. *hint hint for anyone wanting to buy me a present!!*

Moving on…

Rebecca’s Soap Deli features quality, cold processed shea butter soaps, lotions and milk baths. She has been making and selling her soaps since 2001 and sells her goods both on Etsy and at her local farmer’s market. Rebecca likes selling at the farmer’s market because it’s easier for her to answer questions and interact with her customers.  She adds, “It also gives my customers a chance to smell how wonderful my fragrances in my products are and give my lotions a try.” Rebecc’as local sales are general 2-4 times more than her sales online.

When asked why people should buy her soaps, Rebecca says she uses her own unique recipe to create a bar of soap that produces a wonderfully rich lather. “My soaps are perfect for washing your face, body, and even hair and are also great for shaving. All of my soaps contain skin loving ingredients like shea butter, rice bran, and olive oils.”

Lemon Verbena Salt BarRebecca’s favorite product in her shop is her new Lemon Verbena Salt Bar. She says it works well and keeps her skin from breaking out without drying it out.

This experienced artisan has some advice for anyone starting out in the business:

Do your research before you dive in. Keep detailed records and open a separate bank account for your business. Put money aside for self employment tax just in case. While most people don’t make a profit in their first year, you never know, and this will save from scrambling for funds at tax time should your business take off right away. (In the future an accountant can help you set up quarterly estimated tax payments for state and federal taxes.) Promote promote promote. You can’t make money if you’re not willing to spend money. Advertising goes a long way to building your business.

Road Trip Journal

Two of my very good friends are embarking on a road trip along Route 66 this week. You can follow their journeys at their web site www.f2chicks.com.

I decided to make them something special for the trip and enlisted the help of some of our friends, Heather, Robin & Amanda.

Here’s the hybrid road trip journals for Holly and Andie:
